FAQs - our answers below

Is there a specific date I have to apply by?

We accept applications all year round and we hire on a continuous basis. If you're still at university, we advise getting in touch with us two to six months before you graduate. We might also be organizing an event at your university at which we will tell you about specific recruiting periods

How do I apply?

To ensure that your application can be processed as quickly as possible, we kindly request that you attach your CV in the online application tool  . If you face any difficulties, contact us.

How does the application process work?

Once you've applied, you'll hear from us within a week or so. We will look at your CV and if we think you've got what we're looking for, we will invite you for a first round interview. See recruiting process for more information. After each of the three rounds, we'll decide whether or not to take things further

How long does the application process take?

The whole process takes four to six weeks on average, but exceptions can apply, for instance, if you're spending part of your studies abroad, for instance

What level do I start at with my qualifications?

As a graduate or postgraduate university student, you will start with us as a Junior Consultant. If you hold an MBA, you will start as a Consultant or Senior Consultant, depending on your work experience to date. You can also become a Senior Consultant or Project Manager without an MBA, of course, provided you have relevant experience

What skills do I need?

Roland Berger consultants need to be able to think analytically and strategically, need to be creative team players and good at communicating. We're looking for ambitious, business-minded top talent. What course you took is less important than what grade you achieved. We're looking for above-average results. We'd also like to hear how you developed your personal and/or social skills. Relevant work experience (including internships) and international experience would also be an advantage. Given the Belgian context, it is necessary to speak English, Dutch and French or to be willing to learn these languages quickly. Any other language is a bonus.
What we're really looking for are people who feel at home in a challenging international entrepreneurial environment. There's no such thing as an ideal profile here

Do I need a business/economics background to be a consultant?

No. About a third of our consultants in Brussels do not have a business or economics background. We have several engineers and a lawyer for instance. It goes without saying that you have to be interested in business problems. We can offer you international seminars to develop your business know-how

What starting salary can I expect?

Your package will contain a fixed salary, a bonus, a company car and various other incentives. Even though we don't want to give specific figures here, our remuneration will be more than appropriate with reference to the Belgian market

What can I expect in my first few months as a consultant?

New consultants at Roland Berger start with a two-week [Kick-off] course in a European location. During the kick-off, you'll get to know a lot about our business culture and how we work. You'll also be given training in dealing with typical consulting questions. And you'll get to make important international contacts within the Roland Berger organization that you may find very valuable in your future career
As of day one, we'll assign you to a real project, which is where your on-the-job training starts

Do consultants get to work abroad?

In Belgium, we have a clear focus on the Belgian market, which is composed of Belgian clients and international companies established in Belgium. Most of these clients are international and we sometimes work for them at their international locations
Our strong link to the Paris office also yields many opportunities to work in France on a variety of subjects. On a broader scale, exchanges with international offices are also possible
It is important to note that in our office, staffing always takes into account individual preferences as much as possible, especially when it comes to international staffing. See also [Experience abroad].
Apart from that, Belgian project teams sometimes comprise international colleagues, which always makes for an interesting working environment

How do you evaluate performance?

We evaluate how consultants are performing on projects at regular intervals to encourage their personal development, and to ensure consistency and objectivity. Once a project is completed, an evaluation is held. It's not just consultants who are evaluated (Junior Consultants, Consultants and Senior Consultants): Project Managers are also evaluated on a "bottom-up" basis
We evaluate how our consultants are performing every six months. At the end of each year, consultants and Mentors meet to set objectives for the next year

What does career development mean at Roland Berger?

Each consultant is assigned a [Mentor]. Working together, the consultant and Mentor decide what [seminars] are required and what future projects could be interesting in terms of the consultant's individual career planning. The Mentor also acts as the consultant's point of contact if there are any issues they would like to discuss

Our [training program] (link to seminars) offers a wide range of courses that provide the basis for developing personal and professional skills. Course subjects include strategy, management and organization, financial analysis, interpersonal communications, etc. Courses are given by highly qualified outside experts (such as from INSEAD) and our own consultants. They are open to consultants from all our offices worldwide, which also makes them an excellent base from which to network internationally

Our Mentor system also extends to staff in our support services. Once again, they meet their Mentors once a year to discuss what next steps to take in their career and what they can expect (what additional tasks and/or responsibilities they can expect to take on and what training is available)

How many people does Roland Berger employ worldwide?

Currently (end 2006), we have 32 offices across Europe, Asia and the Americas representing 1,700 employees

What kind of consultancy is Roland Berger involved in?

As strategic management consultants, we advise captains of industry and top managers on all possible issues of strategic management, ranging from high level strategic advisory to operational performance improvement projects. Regarding IT consulting, we advise on the strategic implications of information technology, multimedia and e-business, but leave implementing IT strategies to IT specialists.
